This piece is partly inspired by our visit to the Antelope Canyon (Arizona). The starting point: an evocative image reminiscent of an inverted heart (or perhaps seed, or fruit, or womb) which I took when visiting the subterranean wonder, carved over eons by flashfloods eroding the red Navajo sandstone.

The piece veered from the initial sketch, intensifying in energy and insisting to inhabit a dreamy realm between figuration and abstraction.

The finished multi-panel work perhaps asks that we see Planet Earth through the lens of posthumanism as an is-ness: as a form of consciousness, a sentient entity having the right to self-determination; the right to follow her own trajectory of evolution. I see the flow and power of elemental forces simultaneously destroying and birthing new geologic forms and entire worlds into existence. Terra, Mother Gaia, Planet Earth imagined as a powerful entity with a pulse to which all life coheres: fluid, unfolding, graceful, fierce, containing memory and wisdom.

The dominant element is water, as flow, as waves, as energy, as resonance and sound.

The mirroring between the two center shapes and the top and bottom part of the image echoes the hermetic principle: “As above, so below; as below, so above”: coming into balance, into harmony and homeostasis.
